Crochet Soot Sprites

Crochet Studio Ghibli’s adorable dusty creatures! This free soot sprite amigurumi pattern uses Red Heart Scrubby yarn to get the perfect look of these permanently stressed out sprites. First seen in My Neighbor Totoro, Soot Sprites are widely recognized by working in the boiler room in Spirited Away.

Hi everyone!

I’ve wanted to crochet the soot sprites for a while, and when I spotted Red Heart Scrubby Yarn, I knew it would give my soot sprite amigurumi pattern the authentic look I wanted.

The soot sprite amigurumi pattern is not for beginners. Red Heart Scrubby can be difficult to work with. Although it is technically a 4-weight medium-size yarn, the stitches can be difficult to see and work with due to the texture of the yarn.

To combat this, I worked with two strands of yarn. One was from the ball of Scrubby, and the other was from a size 4 worsted-weight acrylic yarn in black.

Not only did the acrylic yarn assist in grabbing the stitches with my hook and allowing me to see the stitches better, but it also added some nice shape and bulk to my sprites. It gave them the fuzzy texture I was hoping for without being too rough on the skin since Red Heart Scrubby is technically for making dish pads.

My soot sprite amigurumi pattern requires an intermediate skill level because of the yarn used, however, this pattern works up amazingly quickly. Depending on your speed, it shouldn’t take you any longer than 30 minutes to make one. The Studio Ghibli soot sprite crochet pattern is a no-sew pattern and the adorable little cuties are made in one piece. I hope you enjoy my Spirited Away crochet pattern!
