What Is Amigurumi?

Amigurumi is a form of crochet used to create stuffed animals/plushies. You use the same skills you would need to crochet a hat or a simple dishcloth, but those skills are combined in a way that creates 3D shapes and plushies.

Amigurumi Meaning:

Amigurumi is the Japanese word for “tiny crochet stuffed animals.” Amigurumi includes stuffed animals and crochet dolls of all sizes. Making giant amigurumi out of chunky yarn is the latest popular crochet trend to take over the internet.

How To Make Amigurumi:

Amigurumi is made with yarn, a crochet hook, stuffing, and various crochet stitches and techniques to make 3D shapes. I love amigurumi because you can use different yarn sizes, textures, and blends to create different looks for plushies. As long as you use a crochet hook small enough for tight stitches, your stuffing won’t show through. There are so many techniques and tools you can use to enhance your amigurumi as well.

Amigurumi Patterns:

Crocheting amigurumi may be intimidating at first. Amigurumi patterns are written like a regular crochet pattern, but instead of working in rows, you will be working in the round. Rows can be used to make specific shapes and an amigurumi pattern should always state when you need to work in rows or rounds.
