3 Types of Hooks
You’ll find a lot of crochet hooks on the market made from various materials. The 3 main materials crochet hooks are made of are plastic, bamboo, and metal.
Plastic:
Plastic crochet hooks can be found everywhere. They’re inexpensive, easy to use, and can be found in a variety of colors and almost all sizes. I recommend using a plastic crochet hook if you're a beginner learning to crochet. Plastic crochet hooks are cheap so you're not out a lot of money if you decide this wonderful hobby isn't for you. Plastic crochet hooks also grip yarn better than metal hooks, so you're less likely to drop stitches and lose count.
Bamboo:
Bamboo crochet hooks are perfect for beginners. The bamboo grips yarn well and are perfect to use with slippery yarn. Bamboo hooks are environmentally friendly and cost-effective. More pleasing to the eye than plastic, bamboo crochet hooks look great in Instagram photos and come in a large size range.
Metal:
If you’re looking for a new crochet hook, consider getting one made out of metal instead of plastic. These are stronger than plastic ones. They’ll hold up better. Not to mention they come in so many pretty colors and sizes! Metal crochet hooks are smooth. Your yarn will glide while you work. These hooks are recommended to be used with coarser yarn for the least resistance. I don't recommend metal crochet hooks for beginners because the stitches can fall off easily due to how smooth and sleek these hooks can be,
Crochet hooks come in plenty of sizes, colors, shapes, and materials. This is a basic beginner’s rundown of the 3 main crochet hook types you’ll see at your local craft store. Ultimately, what crochet hook style and material works for you is based on personal preference. Use what you like and what is comfortable for you. My personal favorite hookes are from Furls Fiberarts. Pretty and ergonomic!
