Why You Shouldn’t Share Paid Crochet Patterns for Free (And What to Do Instead!)

Did you know that sharing paid crochet patterns for free can hurt the crochet community? Let’s talk about why this is a problem and how you can support designers instead!

why you shouldn't share paid crochet patterns for free and what to do instead

Hi everyone,

I love designing crochet patterns. It’s what Summerbug Crafts is all about! Although I’ve never experienced having my paid patterns shared for free (at least not to my knowledge), I know plenty of crochet designers who have on Instagram.

Crochet is a labour of love. Whether you’re stitching up cozy blankets or crafting delicate amigurumi, every piece takes time, effort, and creativity.

Why Sharing Paid Patterns Hurts Designers

When you buy a pattern, you’re not just purchasing a digital file—you’re supporting the hard work of an independent designer. Most crochet pattern designers spend weeks (sometimes months) perfecting their designs. Here’s what goes into it:

  • Sketching and planning the project

  • Crocheting multiple test versions to get it just right

  • Writing and formatting the pattern clearly

  • Taking step-by-step photos or videos

  • Having testers double-check everything

  • Marketing the pattern so people can find it

Imagine pouring all that effort into something, only to see it shared for free in Facebook groups or forums. It’s like someone taking your finished crochet project and selling it as their own. Not cool, right?

Common Myths About Sharing Patterns

“But I paid for it, so I can share it!”

Think of a crochet pattern like a book—you wouldn’t buy a book and then photocopy it for all your friends. When you purchase a pattern, you’re buying a license to use it for yourself, not to distribute it.

“I’m just helping a friend!”

Instead of sharing the actual pattern file, encourage them to buy their own copy. Most patterns cost less than a cup of coffee and help designers create more beautiful designs for everyone.

“The designer won’t notice.”

Actually, they will. Many designers see their work pop up on illegal pattern-sharing sites and lose income because of it. This can be discouraging and even force some designers to stop creating altogether.

What to Do Instead of Sharing Paid Patterns

1. Gift a Pattern – If you love a pattern, consider gifting a copy to your crochet friend! Many platforms (like Etsy and Ravelry) let you send patterns as gifts. I sell digital gift cards so your recipient can purchase whatever crochet pattern they’d like.

2. Recommend the Designer – Share a link to their pattern shop or website so others can purchase directly.

3. Support Free Patterns – Many designers (including me at Summerbug Crafts!) offer free patterns alongside paid ones. These are a great way to try a designer’s style before buying.

4. Join Designer Communities – Many pattern creators have Facebook groups or newsletters where they offer discount codes and giveaways. It’s a win-win!

The crochet world is full of creativity, generosity, and inspiration. By respecting designers’ work, we keep that spirit alive. Support the makers, cherish the patterns, and keep those hooks moving! Let’s keep crochet a supportive community.
