Lion Brand Homespun Yarn

Not a yarn I would have normally picked to use when designing an amigurumi pattern, but I was pleasantly surprised by the results.

Lion Brand Homespun Yarn Review

Hi everyone!

I’ve seen Lion Brand Homespun Yarn in the clearance section practically every time I’ve went to Michael’s on a yarn run. Because of this, I always assumed it was the worst and they just needed to move it off the shelves.

I finally decided to give this yarn a try after I decided to update my simple sea turtle crochet pattern because I loved the blend of various green shades and thought it would look great as the turtle’s shell (it did).

I looked on the Lion Brand website and saw that the yarn easily has a 5 star review. Designed to imitate the look of paintings, this yarn is suggested to be used for sweaters, blankets, and shawls. I can safely say Homespun yarn also works for amigurumi.

What is Homespun Yarn?

Homespun Yarn is a size 5 yarn made with slow colour changes made to represent paintings. It is meant to be used for sweaters and blankets, and is an acrylic and polyester blend. It is machine washable and dryable.

Colour:

With 24 shades to choose from, the range of this line is great. From pastels to brights, they have something for everyone or any project. The purpose of Homespun is to include slow colour changes for a unique look, so if you are looking for a solid colour, you won’t find it here.

Feel:

Homespun is boasted to be the epitome of softness and I have to admit this is true. It may look scratchy, but it makes squishy amigurumi that feels good on the hands. The unique texture and look of the yarn would make some really cute amigurumi, like a lamb or more.

Ease of Use:

When it comes to crocheting with bulky yarns, Homespun was super easy to work with. I could see the stitches when designing my amigurumi and the yarn glides nicely on my crochet hook. However, the yarn can split, and when it does, its a puffy mess. This caused problems when sewing pieces of my turtle together and weaving in my ends. Luckily, I was able to trim some of the unsightly puff off with a pair of scissors.

Skill Level:

Lion Brand’s Homespun is an easy to use use bulky yarn. I believe beginners would be able to crochet with it no problem. If the look of the yarn intimidates you, feel free to try it after you’ve got some experience under your belt.

My final verdict is 8 out of 10. I’d love some solid colour choices and the way the yarn splits and puffs did throw me off a little. Otherwise, Homespun Yarn hit the mark for me.

Don’t forget to grab some for yourself and crochet some cute turtles!
