Gengar Crochet Pattern

One of the original 151, Gengar is a ghost-type Pokémon. Although Gengar may be smiling, it isn’t because it’s friendly! Crochet your ghost Pokémon to haunt your buddies with this free amigurumi pattern.

I wanted to design a crochet ghost Pokémon pattern out of Bernat Velvet yarn, so I designed this Gengar amigurumi.

Gengar Amigurumi

Gengar measures 7” tall x 9” wide. This pattern is worked in the round unless otherwise stated and a stitch marker is highly recommended. Intermediate Pokémon crochet pattern.

What You’ll Need:

• 1 300g ball of Bernat Velvet Yarn in Majestic Purple

• 2.75mm crochet hook

• Polyfill (stuffing)

• 1 Sheet of Red Felt

• 1 Sheet of White Felt

• Black Embroidery Thread

• Fabric Glue

• Scissors

• Sewing Pins

• Darning Needle

• Stitch Marker

• Row Counter

Abbreviations:

ch=chain
sc=single crochet
ss=slip stitch
st(s)=stitch(es)
F/O=fasten off
inc=increase
dec=decrease
BLO=back loop only

Gauge:

16 stitches x 16 rows = 4” in single crochet

Body/Head:
Worked as 1 piece
1. Ch 2. 6 sc in the 1st ch. Do not join. (6 sts)
2. 2 sc around. (12 sts)
3. *1 sc, inc. Repeat from * around. (18 sts)
4. *2 sc, inc. Repeat from * around. (24 sts)
5. *3 sc, inc. Repeat from * around. (30 sts)
6. *4 sc, inc. Repeat from * around. (36 sts)
7. *5 sc, inc. Repeat from * around. (42 sts)
8. *6 sc, inc. Repeat from * around. (48 sts)
9 - 19. Sc around. (48 sts)
20. *6 sc, dec. Repeat from * around. (42 sts)
21. *5 sc, dec. Repeat from * around. (36 sts)
22. *4 sc, dec. Repeat from * around. (30 sts)
23. *3 sc, dec. Repeat from * around. (24 sts)

Stuff.
25. *1 sc, dec. Repeat from * around. (12 sts)

Ss and F/O. Use tail to sew up the hole.

Ears:
1. Ch 2. 4 sc in the 1st ch. Do not join. (4 sts)
2. Sc around. (4 sts)
3. *1 sc, inc. Repeat from * around. (6 sts)
4. Sc around. (6 sts)
5. *2 sc, inc. Repeat from * around. (8 sts)
6. Sc around. (8 sts)
7. *3 sc, inc. Repeat from * around. (10 sts)
8. Sc around. (10 sts)
9. *4 sc, inc. Repeat from * around. (12 sts)
10. Sc around. (12 sts)
11. *5 sc, inc. Repeat from * around. (14 sts)

Ss and F/O. Leave a long enough tail to attach the ear to the top of the body. Stuff and attach. Repeat for 2nd ear.

Spikes Between Ears:
Note that this is worked in rows.
1. Ch 4.
2. Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in the next 2 ch's.
3. Turn. Ch 6. Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and the next 5 sts.
4. Turn. Ch 4. Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and sc in the next 2 sts.
5. Turn. Ch 3. Sc in 2nd ch, and sc in the next st.
Ss and F/O, leaving a long enough tail to attach to the top of the body between the ears.

Arms:
Note that the arms are worked from the open end you stuff and attach to the body, to the closed hand and fingers.
1. Ch 12. Ss end together to create a circle. (12 sts)
2 - 6. Sc around. (12 sts)
If you haven’t already, flip the arm inside out so the rs is showing and the ws is inside the arm.
7. *2 sc, dec. Repeat from * around. (9 sts)
8. *1 sc, dec. Repeat from * around. (6 sts)
9. Dec until closed. Ss
10. To make the fingers, ch 3 and sc into the 2 nd ch from hook. Sc into the closed arm. Repeat 2 more times.
Ss and F/O. Stuff and attach to the body under the ears. Repeat for 2nd arm.

Legs:
Note that the arms are worked from the open end you stuff and attach to the body, to the closed feet and toes.
1. Ch 14. Ss end together to create a circle. (14 sts)
2 - 4. Sc around. (14 sts)
5. Sc around in the BLO. (14 sts)
6. *1 sc, dec. Repeat from * around. (10 sts)
7. Dec around until closed.
8. To make the toes, ch 3 and sc into the 2nd ch from hook. Sc into the closed arm. Repeat 2 more times.
Ss and F/O. Stuff and attach to body. Repeat for 2nd leg.

Tail:
1. Ch 2. 4 sc in the 1st ch. Do not join. (4 sts)
2. Sc around. (4 sts)
3. 2 sc around. (8 sts)
4. Sc around. (8 sts)
5. *1 sc, inc. Repeat from * around. (12 sts)
6. Sc around. (12 sts)
7. *2 sc, inc. Repeat from * around. (16 sts)
8. Sc around. (16 sts)
9. *3 sc, inc. Repeat from * around. (20 sts)
10. Sc around. (20 sts)
11. *4 sc, inc. Repeat from * around. (24 sts)
12. Sc around. (24 sts)
Ss and F/O. Leave a long tail to attach to the back of the body in-between and slightly above the legs.

Back Spikes:
1. Ch 2. 4 sc in the 1st ch. Do not join. (4 sts)
2. Sc around. (4 sts)
3. 2 sc around. (8 sts)
4 - 5. Sc around. (8 sts)
Ss and F/O. Leave a long tail to attach to the back. Stuff and attach. Repeat 6 more times. Weave in all your ends.

Face:
Use the red and white felt to make the eyes and smile. Use your black embroidery thread for the pupils of the eyes and the outline of the teeth. Attach eyes and smile with fabric glue.

All in all, I am very satisfied with how my crochet Gengar turned out, and I love how Bernat Velvet made it look and feel.
